Save Our Butterflies Week is Parks for Butterflies

Message from Butterfly Conservation:

The theme for this year’s Save Our Butterflies Week is parks for Butterflies.

Community gardens are a great ’shop window’ to showcase the measures that can be taken to provide for butterflies in a more urban environment.

We are asking branches to consider creating a butterfly garden or wild area in a public space, such as your local council run park, which can then be ‘launched’ during Save Our Butterflies Week. Alternatively, you could highlight an existing garden or butterfly habitat that has been created to use as a demonstration area.

Save Our Butterflies Week is about reaching people who might not otherwise hear about the work of Butterfly Conservation. Hopefully through the parks initiative we can attract new members and supporters and inspire the public to take action in their own gardens.

This idea was discussed at the October BLM and met with broad approval and some suggestions for events.

Several branches have already managed garden projects in their region. An information pack will be circulated soon containing case-studies of successful community gardens, funding ideas, example press releases and details of other resources that will be available for you to use at your Save our Butterflies event.

Just a reminder that the dates for SOBW 2010 are 24 July to 1 August.

Branches can still participate in Save Our Butterflies Week even if they cannot arrange a suitable park location, by organising a public event in any good butterfly habitat.

Please let me know who will be coordinating SOBW publicity in your branch and details of any events you have planned as decisions are made.

Best wishes

Catrin Hollingum
Publicity Officer
